Abstract:
Drilling activity in the Four Corners-Intermountain area declined nearly 50% in 1986 from 1985 levels. A total of 711 wells was drilled. Of these, 170 were exploratory tests and 541 were development wells.
Exploratory successes numbered 79 and had a success rate of 46.47%. The high success rate is accounted for by an 80% success rate for outpost and extension wells. New-field wildcats were successful in 13 out of 87 attempts or about 15% of the time. Total exploratory footage dropped to 914,028 ft from the 1985 total of 1,732,656 ft.
Excluding southwestern Colorado, for which no separate statistics were available in 1985, Four Corners-Intermountain area development well footage dropped to 3,087,842 ft from the 1985 total of 6,549,832 ft, a decline of nearly 53%. Successful completions numbered 496 in 541 attempts, for a 91.68% success rate.
Two new development contracts were approved for areas in New Mexico by the Bureau of Land Management. Exploratory drilling is expected to start during 1987.
