Title: Oil and Gas Developments in New York in 1988

Author(s): Arthur M. Van Tyne (2)

Abstract:

About 200 wells were completed in New York during 1988, approximately the same number as in 1986 and 1987.

Four 1988 exploratory completions were reported in the 1988 Committee on Statistics of Drilling report. However, 25 additional exploratory wells completed from 1986 to 1988 are discussed. This completes and updates unreported New York exploratory drilling for the past 3 years.

Oil production in 1988 was 566,136 bbl. Gas production was about 23.4 bcf. The average price paid for New York crude during 1988 was $15.21/bbl, and the estimated average wellhead price paid for gas was $2.00/mcf.

In 1988, 15 crew-weeks of reflection seismic work were accomplished in New York.

Drilling may decline in 1989 because some large drilling programs have been completed. Although oil prices were increasing in early 1989, little or no new oil field drilling is expected. An overall slow increase in gas prices will help gas field drillers.
