Drilling activity in the northern Rockies in 1988 increased slightly to 1,408 wells compared to 1,286 wells during 1987. Exploratory drilling resulted in 104 oil wells and 20 gas wells for a success rate of 20.6%. Development drilling resulted in 596 successful wells and 210 dry holes for a success rate of 73.9%.
