Abstract:
Confidence in petroleum activities in the Far East in 1988 was reflected with more acreage awards, particularly in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Pakistan. Seismic acquisition and exploratory drilling both increased dramatically from 1987 levels, although the levels of 1985 have yet to be reached.
No major discoveries were reported during 1988 as the trend of small to medium oil and gas discoveries continued. Additional potential reserves were reported from India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, People's Republic of China, and Thailand. Discoveries may also have occurred in Korea and Vietnam.
Development drilling maintained the modest rate of increase of previous years. Far East oil and condensate production, excluding Indonesia (where official figures are not available), increased by more than 2% to 4.14 million b/d; gas output, again excluding Indonesia, rose to 7.85 bcf/day.
