Recovery of exploration activity reported from most regions of the world in 1988 eventually included the North African countries (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, and Tunisia). Again, however, licensed acreage fell to 2,765,296 km2 under concession in 1988 compared to 2,775,781 km2 in 1987. Overall drilling activity was up 13%, exploratory meterage fell 5%, and development drilling meterage rose by 45%. Production of crude oil and condensate was 2% up, reaching about 3,021,000 b/d.
