Figure 19.
Schematic of layered model. (A) The layered modeled consists of high-permeability layers interbedded with low-permeability strata. (B) The modeled domain is composed of a high-permeability layer (blue) and a low-permeability layer (gray). We model half the thickness of each layer. The length of the model (L) is half the distance between hydraulic fractures. We discretized the low-permeability layer into 3460 triangular elements and a total mesh area of 31.2 m2, and the high-permeability layer into 810 triangular elements and a total mesh area of 6.5 m2. ϕ1 = layer 1 total porosity; ϕ2 = layer 2 total porosity; h1 = layer 1 thickness; h2 = layer 2 thickness; kh1 = layer 1 horizontal permeability; kh2 = layer 2 horizontal permeability; kv1 = layer 1 vertical permeability; kv2 = layer 2 vertical permeability; pf = pressure at the producing face (hydraulic fracture); pi = initial reservoir pressure.
