The Exploration Desk: Grosmont Formation in the Loon Lake Area

Helen R. Belyea

ABSTRACT

Crystalline, vuggy dolomites were penetrated between 2,890 and 3,410 feet depth in the Imperial Loon Lake 5-23 well, in Lsd. 5, Sec. 23, Twp. 86, Rge. 9 W. 5 Mer. These beds occupy a similar stratigraphic position to the crystalline vuggy dolomites of the Upper Devonian Grosmont formation in the Athabaska area, Alberta. A comparison of the two areas is made and the conclusion is drawn that the dolomites of the Loon Lake area are a northward continuation of the Grosmont formation.
