Abstract
Cardium Stratigraphy of the Pembina Field
ABSTRACT
The oil accumulation in the Pembina field results from the up-dip "shale out" of the Cardium sand with local structure having no effect on the accumulation.
The Cardium formation can be divided into five units which are, in descending order: the upper shale, the conglomerate, the upper sand, the middle unit and the lower sand. Due to facies changes in the middle unit, three sand bodies develop in some parts of the field. The Pembina field can be divided into four areas on the basis of sand distribution. A definite relationship exists between the interval from the top of the Cardium formation to the top of the main sand, and the thickness of this sand.
Lithology of the Cardium sand suggests that it is not a turbidity current deposit but rather a normal off-shore sand body, deposited in a shallow marine environment.
