Cardium Sedimentation in the Pembina River Area

E. R. Michaelis1)

ABSTRACT

The Cardium of central Alberta was deposited during a period of abundant sediment supply into the Pembina area. In the Foothills, west of Pembina, the Cardium has been divided into five cycles, each a regressive phase of sedimentation. These are traced into the Pembina area, where the middle cycle, which is characterized by the greatest supply of sediment, is equivalent to the sandy beds of Pembina oil field. Shorelines lay generally within the Foothills area throughout Cardium time. Pembina was situated on the seaward margin of a broad sedimentary shelf. Tidal currents were the dominant agent of distribution of sediment on the shelf. The sand beaches of the Foothills and the gravel bars of Pembina field were moulded by waves.
