Petrology of the Blairmore Sandstones

R. Perry Glaister

ABSTRACT

In the southern Alberta Foothills the Lower Cretaceous continental sediments of the Blairmore group can be divided on the basis of lithology into two distinct parts. The Lower Blairmore formation consists dominantly of grey shale and grey to buff protoquartzite-type sandstones. The Upper Blairmore sediments are dominantly green, and the sandstones are usually highly feldspathic and chloritic arkose and feldspathic greywackes. The lithology of the Lower Blairmore sandstones suggest a sedimentary or meta-sedimentary orogenic positive source area in south-central British Columbia, whereas the arkosic sediments of the Upper Blairmore are indicative of a volcanic source.
