Trutch Creek, B.C., An Excellent Example of Stream Piracy

Robert H. Barton

ABSTRACT

Trutch Creek, in northeastern British Columbia (94G/10) captured the head-waters of Middle Fork Creek. This excellent example of stream piracy results from differing local base levels of erosion due partly to piedmont glaciation. The Trutch Creek piracy is part of a large system of stream capture involving imposition of a more recent drainage pattern upon an older structurally controlled pattern. Effects of stream piracy must be considered in geomorphic interpretations of geologic structures.
