Nomenclature of Upper Carboniferous and Permian Strata in the Subsurface of the Peace River Area

H. L. Halbertsma

ABSTRACT

Four new formation names are proposed for Paleozoic strata above the Mississippian Debolt formation and below the Triassic Spray River formation in the Peace River area. The first three formations embrace the strata defined as the Stoddart formation by Rutgers. These are the Golata and Kiskatinaw formations (Mississippian) and the Taylor Flat formation (Pennsylvanian). The name Belloy is proposed for the Permian formation, often referred to as Permo-Pennsylvanian, which lies unconformably on the Pennsylvanian and Mississippian beds. The new nomenclature was considered necessary because Rutger's work was done without the benefit of age determinations which are now available. The newly proposed formations are distinctive mappable units.
