Contacts of Sedimentary Formations: A Resume

C. G. Winder

ABSTRACT

A contact is the boundary or limiting surface of a formation. Although this feature, common to adjacent rock units, is used to establish stratigraphic, sedimentational and structural relationships, accurate and complete descriptions are often neglected or omitted. The contact may be conformable or unconformable; the relationship may not be consistent over the area of occurrence. The unconformable relationship is interpreted as representing a prolonged period of erosion; the conformable contact would seem to be an environmental change, usually within the same realm of deposition. More information on contacts should be recorded.
