Stratigraphic Relationship Between the Milk River Formation of the Southern Plains and the Belly River Formation of the Southern Foothills of Alberta

John F. Lerbekmo

ABSTRACT

A distinction between Belly River and Milk River sandstones on the basis of quartz character is used to determine the relationship between the southern Plains and Foothills sections of the continental beds below the Bearpaw shale. It is concluded that the Milk River formation interfingers westward with the lower part of the Belly River formation of the Foothills, and that the interval from the base of the Bearpaw shale to the top of the Colorado shale under the Plains is approximately equivalent to the Belly River formation of the Foothills.
