Modern Sediment Studies and Ancient Carbonate Environments

F. W. Beales

ABSTRACT

Primary sediment compositions and structures are vitally important to the later development of carbonate rocks and during their formation exhibit a more marked environmental control than that found in almost any other group of rocks. The tempo of study of modern carbonate sediments in recent years has been such that very much clearer environmental patterns are becoming apparent. The concept of the importance of the tectonic framework in understanding detrital rock patterns is paralleled in carbonate rocks by the importance of the ecological controls at the time of their formation. The data, applied to ancient rocks, should permit a more thorough understanding of them and, therefore, a greatly improved chance of predicting and finding reservoir conditions.
