Diverse Stromatolite Forms from the Upper Devonian of Saskatchewan

W. L. Kaufmann

ABSTRACT

The diversity of algal stromatolite forms, based on studies of Recent occurrences, is the product of diverse environmental conditions interacting with the algal mats and sediment. The algal stromatolites described herein were recovered from the Upper Devonian of Saskatchewan and are classified according to the geometric nomenclature proposed by Logan et al. (1962 & 1964). Structures present included (1) spherical structures (SS); (2) composite forms of spherical structures and vertically stacked hemispheroids (SSrarr.gif (59 bytes)SH); (3) composite forms of spherical structure, vertically stacked hemispheroids and laterally linked hemispheroids (SS rarr.gif (59 bytes) SH rarr.gif (59 bytes) LLH). This rock specimen, although representing only 5 inches of sediment by virtue of the contained algal stromatolite forms reflects subtle changes in the depositional energy.
