Abstracts of Papers: Shaunavon (Middle Jurassic) Palaeogeology, Rapdan Area, Southwestern Saskatchewan

James E. Christopher

The Shaunavon Formation comprises a lower member of cream-coloured calcilutite and an upper member of mixed lithologies ranging from argillaceous limestones to oolitic bioclastic limestones, quartzose sandstones and dolomites. The upper member is divisible into units on the basis of fine contemporaneous dolomite beds, which also serve to differentiate the elements of the palaeogeographic environment. At the time of deposition supratidal beaches and shoals flanked by lower lying intertidal flats covered the Rapdan area. The distribution of the sedimentary bodies was controlled by structural blocks and lineaments still conspicuous in the area in spite of episodic long-term epeirogenic movement.
