The Cypress Hills, because of their unique geology and geography, formed the scene for a sequence of events that went a great way to maintain Confederation. Four peoples, native Canadians, native Americans, white Canadians and white Americans frequented and jousted for supremacy in the area for nearly three decades. The Hills consequently became the 'Cradle of the Mounted Police' and virtually the cradle of the nation between the Red River settlements and the Rockies.
