Abstract
Abstracts of Theses: Bay of Fundy Bottom Sediments
Two hundred and twelve grab samples and twenty eight cores, taken from the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of Maine, constitute the basis for a study of sedimentation in the Bay of Fundy. Three methods of mechanical analysis were employed and a critique of each is given. The Bay of Fundy is underlain mainly by gravels with fine sediments occurring mainly on the Saint John delta and in the Chignecto Bay area. The sediments are mainly well sorted and symmetrical. Sedimentation includes active deposition on the Saint John delta and in the Chignecto Bay area, and winnowing in the areas of coarse sediments. The distribution of sedimentary characters is governed by oceanographic features and not by depth or distance from shore. The sedimentary characteristics of the cores indicate changing conditions of sedimentation in the Bay of Fundy. The coarse sediments are thought to have been deposited in post-glacial times before the rise in sea level. Both basin and platform type sediments are deposited in the Bay of Fundy.
