Abstract
Cyclic Deposits of Potash in Saskatchewan
ABSTRACT
Exploration for hydrocarbons and potash in the Regina area has confirmed the presence of thick beds of sylvinitic potash ore. Mineralization is concentrated in three grouped intervals in the upper part of the Prairie Evaporite Formation of Middle Devonian age. Observed variations in composition, texture and fabric are believed to prove the primary nature of the ores discussed. The gross intervals, therefore, are interpreted to represent three major successive cycles of regression. Each major cycle is composed of numerous rhythms of deposition fluctuating from halite to sylvite, commonly commencing and ending with a small hiatus expressed by a fine clay lamina.
The ore in the lowermost potash beds has excellent industrial qualities where it combines high grade with low insoluble content and coarse crystallinity. The ores in the younger zones, although locally of high grade, are more contaminated by insolubles and have a finer crystal fabric.
