Biostratigraphy of the Glenogle Formation (Ordovician) Near Glenogle, British Columbia

M. L. Larson,, D. E. Jackson,

ABSTRACT

The type section of the Glenogle Formation (Ordovician) is incomplete due to faulting and poor exposure, nevertheless, exposures in the Kicking Horse River Valley suggest that most of the zones recognized in unfaulted sections in the Stanford and Hughes Ranges farther south are represented. The base of the Glenogle is gradational with the McKay Formation but the contact with the overlying Mount Wilson Formation is not exposed.

Twenty-four genera and forty species of graptolites of early Arenigian (Chewtonian) to early Caradocian age are recorded from the type area. The zonal sequence recognized, in ascending order, consists of, Didymograptus protobifidus, Isograptus caduceus, Paraglossograptus etheridgei, ?Diplograptus decoratus, Glyptograptus cf. teretiusculus, and Nemagraptus gracilis. The pre-teretiusculus zones are remarkably similar to those of Yukon, Texas and Australia but are different from those of Britain. Stratigraphic thicknesses of the zones cannot be ascertained because exposures containing the faunas occur almost exclusively as isolated outcrops.
