Abstracts of Theses: Upper Mississippian Non-Carbonate Microfauna from the Windsor Group of the Atlantic Provinces

Non-carbonate microfossils have been obtained from insoluble residue of limestones in the Windsor Group (Upper Mississippian) of the Atlantic Provinces. From these microfossils, 45 species and 12 genera of conodonts, 27 species and 10

genera of arenaceous foraminifera, and eight genera of scolecodonts have been identified, of which nine species and one subspecies of conodonts, and five species of arenaceous foraminifera are newly recognized. Conodonts are believed to be internal supporting elements for tissues of a nektonic animal.

The paleoecology of the non-carbonate microfauna found in the Windsor Group is pictured as a shallow marine environment closely associated with periods of tectonic instability. Correlation of the different subzones of the Windsor Group is supported by the presence of restricted species of conodonts, arenaceous foraminifera, and scolecodonts. Correlation between the Windsor Group, the Visean of Europe, and the Chesterian Series of the United States is stressed by the finding of similar concodonts and arenaceous foraminifera in these localities. The suggestion is made that the Skir-Dhu beds of North East Cape Breton Island belong to Subzone E of the Windsor type-area.

A withdrawal of the Upper Windsor sea in a southerly direction from the Newfoundland portion of the basin is favoured by the author because of similar arenaceous foraminifera found in Newfoundland and in the southern part of the basin in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The paleogeography of Windsor time is visualized as isolated basins surrounded by low positive areas resulting from the instability prevailing throughout the period.
