Age Incidence of Natural Gas: GEOLOGICAL NOTE

F. K. North

ABSTRACT

The pre-eminent role of Middle Cretaceous time and rocks in the generation and pooling of oil is widely recognised. The fact that the greatest known concentration of nonassociated natural gas is also pooled in Middle Cretaceous rocks -- in the northwestern Siberian basin -- should not be interpreted to mean that gas can continue to be sought for as "another version of oil." The Persian Gulf oil basin is an exaggerated version of a general case; the northwest Siberian gas basin is an exaggerated version of an exceptional case. If that exceptional case is excluded, the greatest concentrations of natural gas known in the world are in Permo-Triassic strata. The distribution of these is so different from that of Cretaceous strata that extensive reorientation of exploration thinking may be desirable.
