A New Approach to Sediment Diagenesis: Part I: An Observed Relationship between Sonic Transit-Time and Previous HitDepthNext Hit in the Tertiary Sediments of the Mackenzie Delta; A Potential Petroleum Exploration Tool.

J. N. Van Elsberg

ABSTRACT

Sonic transit-time/Previous HitdepthNext Hit relationships in the Tertiary mudstones and shales of the Mackenzie Delta, Canada show a characteristic pattern. From statistical data it appears that there is a good correlation between the frequency distribution of pooled hydrocarbons and the sonic transit-time/Previous HitdepthNext Hit relationships in the mudstones and shales. It is suggested that good seismic velocity data can be used to determine the Previous HitdepthTop that is most favourable for hydrocarbon accumulation.
