A New Approach to Sediment Diagenesis: Part II: A Revised Concept of Sediment Diagenesis

J. N. Van Elsberg

ABSTRACT

A revised concept of sediment diagenesis is proposed. In this concept amorphous material plays a major role.

A "hydrocarbon migration and accumulation window" is proposed. Within this window optimum conditions exist for the primary migration and accumulation of hydrocarbons.

It is implied that the composition and quantity of the pooled hydrocarbons are strongly influenced by the geothermal gradient.

The concept provides a useful framework for relating the physical, chemical and mineralogical aspects of sediment diagenesis.
