Megaspore Paleoecology: Pakowki, Foremost and Oldman Formations (Upper Cretaceous), Southeastern Alberta

J. D. Speelman, L. V. Hills

ABSTRACT

A correlation appears to exist between depositional environments as determined by sedimentary structures, and the size and species composition of megaspore assemblages. One-hundred-and-fifty-gram samples with 500 or more megaspores each represent continental or marginal-marine sediments; offshore-marine deposits yield very low numbers; a gradual increase occurs when approaching a marginal-marine from a marine environment. The megaspore assemblage in the offshore-marine deposits is varied, reflecting both inland and coastal vegetation, whereas in marginal-marine sediments it is strongly dominated by a few species, representing coastal vegetation. Assemblages in fluvial-overbank and freshwater-marsh deposits have highly variable compositions, dominated by species other than those found in the marginal-marine sediments.
