Van Creek and Nicol Creek Formations (New): A Revision of the Stratigraphic Nomenclature of the Middle Proterozoic Purcell Supergroup, Southeastern British Columbia

M. E. McMechan, T. Hoy, R. A. Price

ABSTRACT

The Van Creek Formation (proposed) is the sequence of siltite and argillite, 200 to 850 m thick, that overlies the Kitchener Formation in the Hughes Range, Purcell Mountains, and southeastern Selkirk Mountains in southeastern British Columbia. It is equivalent to unit 5a on Leech's (1960) map of Fernie map-area, west half, and was formerly called the 'Siyeh Formation'. It is correlative with the upper member of the Siyeh Formation in the Galton, MacDonald and Clark Ranges, the upper unit of the Piegan Group in the Whitefish Range, and the upper strata of the 'Siyeh Formation' and lower part of the Snowslip Formation in the Lewis Range.

The Nicol Creek Formation (proposed) is the sequence of basaltic and andesitic lava flows, tuffs, and nonvolcanic sedimentary rocks, 60 to 750 m thick, that overlies the Van Creek Formation and underlies the Sheppard or the Dutch Creek Formation. It is equivalent to unit 5b on Leech's (1960) map of Fernie map-area, west half, and was formerly included within the 'Siyeh Formation'. It is correlative with the Purcell Lava in the Galton, Clark, and northern Whitefish and Lewis Ranges, and probably with the lower part of the Sheppard (Shepard) Formation in the northern Whitefish and southern Clark Ranges.
