Late Cretaceous (Campanian) Foraminiferal Faunas, Charter et al. Saturna No. 1, Gulf Islands, British Columbia

Alan McGugan

ABSTRACT

The well penetrated the Cedar District, Protection and Upper Haslam Formations to a total depth of 3948 ft (1203 m). One hundred and twenty-eight shale samples of cores yielded abundant and diverse microfaunas of benthic and planktic foraminifera of Campanian age which indicate environments from restricted nearshore to open marine, and enable correlations to be made with microfaunas from the Upper Trent River, Upper Haslam, Cedar District, and Lower Northumberland formations in outcrop. The upper part of the Cedar District Formation may be repeated by faulting in the well. The relatively thin development of sandstones of the Protection Formation in the well may be explained by a rapid basinward facies change.
