Neogene Dinoflagellate Cysts from the Hunt Dome Kopanoar M-13 Well, Beaufort Sea, Canada: GEOLOGICAL NOTE

Jonathan P. Bujak, Edward H. Davies

ABSTRACT

Reworked palynomorphs dominate the Plio-Pleistocene section of the Hunt Dome Kopanoar M-13 well, Beaufort Sea. Epifluorescence is a valuable technique for distinguishing the indigenous population, and reveals marine and freshwater dinoflagellate cysts that would otherwise be inconspicuous.

Assemblages of well-preserved dinoflagellate cysts occur lower in the well, between 8477 and 8744 ft (2584-2665 m). These distinctive assemblages are dated late Middle to Late Miocene (nannoplankton zones NN7 to NN11, planktic foraminiferal zones N13 to N17) and show affinities with assemblages from North Pacific - Bering Sea and North Atlantic - Norwegian Sea D.S.D.P. sites. They are the most northern Miocene dinoflagellates described to date.
