Structure of Albertite from New Brunswick, Canada

Ganjavar Khavari-Khorasani

ABSTRACT

Optical and X-ray diffraction investigations confirm that albertite from the Albert Mines oil shale, Canada is a bitumen with a low degree of organic diagenesis. The lack of a substantial amount of condensed aromatic systems in the molecular structure of albertite is reflected by the weak absorption in the visible spectrum and the decline of the refractive index toward longer wavelengths. X-ray studies reveal that albertite displays a dominant Previous HitreflectionTop band corresponding to a spacing of 0.454 nm, which is consistent with aliphatic and/or alicyclic structures. When albertite is heated to 1400°C, there is a marked increase in all the optical properties, and the corresponding interlayer spacing (d) is reduced to a value consistent with the state of incipient graphitization. With further heat-treatment of the bitumen to 2500°C, a highly graphitized carbon is formed. All the properties of the Canadian albertite indicate that the primary organic matter from which the bitumen was formed contained a substantial quantity of H-rich components.
