Mineral Transformations During in Situ Recovery of Bitumen from Carbonate Rock: A Statistical-Experimental Study

ABSTRACT

A screening study was carried out on carbonates from the Upper Devonian Grosmont Formation in northeastern Alberta to evaluate the fluid-rock interactions that may occur during in situ recovery of bitumen. A factorial design was employed with experiments at two levels of each of the factors: bitumen (absent and present), temperature (200°C and 265°C), salinity (no NaCl and 0.1 m NaCl), and time (13 days and 26days). One centre-point experiment (bitumen, 233°C, 0.05 m NaCl, 19.5 days) was carried out in quadruplicate. The dependent variables were: liquid and gas chemical compositions, relative mineral abundances, and bitumen released during hydrothermal treatment. Scanning electron and optical microscopy, as well as surface area and pore-size distribution measurements on selected samples, were used to further interpret the results. Dolomite, quartz, and diopside dissolution, calcite formation, and formation of an unidentified amorphous silicate phase took place. In addition, salt effects on carbonate solubility were observed. The influence of the independent variables and their interactions on these processes were identified through analysis of variance. All factors played a role, but temperature was the most important independent variable. Surface area measurements showed an increase after hydrothermal treatment. Also, the pore-size distribution had changed, and it is postulated that dissolution enlargement of fine pores occurred concurrently with mineral deposition in large pores. Only one sample, however, was investigated in this way.

LES TRANSFORMATIONS DES MINERAUX LORS DE LA STIMULATION IN SITU DE LA PRODUCTION DU PETROLE DES ROCHES CARBONIFERES: ETUDE STATISTIQUE ET EXPERIMENTALE

RESUME

Une etude selective a ete effectuee sur les carbonates en provenance de la formation Upper Devonian Grosmont, au nord-est de la province d'Alberta, pour faire evaluer la possibilite de l'interaction fluide-roche lors de la stimulation in situ de la production du petrole. Les experiments ont ete programmes selon un modele factorial de deux niveaux pour chaque facteur, ceci-dit: bitume absent ou present, temperature de 200 et 265°C, Salinit&eacute absente ou de 0.1 m NaCl et temps de 13 ou 26 jours. Egalement, un experiment intermediaire a ete programme pour etre repete quatre fois, dont les conditions ont ete les suivantes: bitume pre&eacutsent, 233°C, salinite de 0.05 m NaCl et 19.5 jours. Dans le modele factorial decrit ci-dessus, les suivantes variables dependantes ont ete considerees: analyse chimique du gaz et du liquide, abondance relative des mineraux moyennement la diffraction des rayons X, dissolution de bitume lors du traitement hydrothermique. En outre, l'etendue superficielle et la mesure de la distribution des pores ont ete observees; moyennement microscope electronique a balayage et microscope optique pour etre utilisees dans l'interpretation des resultats a venir. Parmis les resultats obtenus sur l'abondance de mineraux il faut souligner la signification de la dissolution des dolomite, quartz et diopside, la formation du calcite, ainsi que d'une phase amorphe de silicate non-identifiae. En plus, il a ete observe l'effet de l'eau salee sur la solubilite des carbonates. L'influence des variables independantes et leur interaction sur les processus decrits auparavant ont ete identifiees au moyen de l'analyse de variance qui a montre tous les facteurs importants, mais la temperature etant la plus importante variable independante. L'etendue superficielle a ete augmente, au moins en ce qui concerne l'experiment pour lequel on a obtenu des donnees sur cette quantite. La distribution des pores a egalement changee et il est suppose qu'un double effet se produit: l'agrandissement des petits pores du a la dissolution, et la precipitation des mineraux dans les grandes pores.
