Effect of Mineral Transformation on Porosity and Permeability of Dolomite Rock During in Situ Recovery of Bitumen: A Preliminary Study

Witold Kubacki, Jan Boon, Gordon Bird, Brian Wiwchar

ABSTRACT

This paper reports the initial results of an experimental program on the effects of hot water and steam stimulation on carbonate rock. Dolomites were reacted at 200 and 265°C for 13 and 26 days in 0.1 M NaCl solution and then subjected to a waterflood at 200°C and a steam flood at 265°C. Porosity was observed to increase in both static and dynamic experiments. The permeability measurements before and after treatment were not reproducible but the trend was toward a permeability decrease. Migration of clay-sized material was observed in all runs. Hydrothermal reaction produced margarite, hydromagnesite, huntite, ankerite and amorphous Mg-Al silicates.
