Intercutaneous Wedges, the Triangle Zone and Structural Thickening of the Mynheer Coal Previous HitSeamNext Hit at Coal Valley in the Rocky Mountain Foothills of Central Alberta

H.A.K. Charlesworth, L.G. Gagnon

ABSTRACT

Throughout orogenesis the most external structural units in the Rocky Mountain Foothills of central Alberta were intercutaneous wedges. Each wedge tapered northeastward and was bound upward and downward by southwest- and northeast-verging thrusts, respectively. The triangle zone consists mainly of horses that accreted at the bases of such wedges. Duplexes made up of these horses occur at a wedge's northeastern extremity. Thickening of the Mynheer coal Previous HitseamNext Hit at Coal Valley has resulted from the formation of duplexes, each of whose floor and roof thrusts follow the bottom and top of the Previous HitseamNext Hit. Vertical stacking of these duplexes has given rise to thicknesses of up to 20 times the stratigraphic thickness of 4.2 m. The thickened Previous HitseamTop occurs at the extremity of an intercutaneous wedge that moved northeastward about 2.5 km with respect to adjacent strata.
