Preferred Orientations of Middle Silurian Guelph-Amabel Reefs of Southern Ontario

A. L. Smith, J. A. Legault

ABSTRACT

Field work completed during the summer of 1982 has confirmed that biohermal mounds in the Middle Silurian Guelph-Amabel outcrop belts of southern Ontario have preferred axes of orientation. Previous interpretations have speculated that these orientations are the result of glacial scouring, with the long dimension of the individual structures apparently conforming to the direction of ice movement. Field observations suggest, however, that the relationship between the elongation of the surface exposures of the Amabel and Guelph reefs cannot be fully explained by glacial scouring as had been suggested. There are northeasterly trending Guelph reefs and northwesterly and northerly trending Amabel reefs. Recent work completed on similar structures in different geographical locations within the Michigan Basin has provided paleogeographical data that support the explanation of the geometry of the Amabel and Guelph Previous HitreefTop systems in terms of primary orientations (Shaver et al., 1978).
