Stratigraphy of the Basal Cretaceous Lower Mannville Formation, Southern Alberta and North-central Montana

ABSTRACT

Basal Cretaceous sediments of the lower Mannville formation were deposited over a dissected cratonic plain underlain by Upper Jurassic strata in the southern Alberta and north-central Montana Plains. During the latest Jurassic and earliest Cretaceous, large-scale river systems evolved in the western interior, which created features such as the Cut Bank and Whitlash Valleys mapped in this paper.

Transgression of the Clearwater Sea across central Alberta in the early Albian raised the base level of sedimentation and triggered deposition of lower Mannville strata. Little sediment accumulated in the eastern, topographically high part of the study area, except in an intricate network of valleys. In the western Cut Bank Valley, however, up to 60 m of lower Mannville sediments were deposited, which are divided into three members: the basal Cut Bank sandstone member, the overlying medial member, and the capping "Calcareous" member. A progression from fluvial to lacustrine-marginal marine environments of deposition are recorded by these strata.

As the sea retreated, renewed erosion took place over much of the study area, and subsequent upper Mannville deposition was marked by a flood of distinctive, volcanically derived sediments.

LA STRATIGRAPHIE DU MANNVILLE INFERIEUR, CRETACE DE BASE, ALBERTA MERIDIONALE ET SEPTENTRION DU CENTRE DU MONTANA

RESUME

Les sediments datant du Cretace de base et faisant partie de la formation du Mannville inferieur ont ete deposes dans une plaine cratonique dissequee, dont le relief est compose de strates du Jurassique superieur en Alberta meridionale et dans le septentrion du centre des plaines du Montana. A la toute fin du Jurassique et au tout debut du Cretace, des grands reseaux hydrographiques furent etablis dans la plaine cratonique inferieure, creant ainsi des particularites telles que les vallees Cutbank et Whitlash ici cartographiees.

La transgression de la mer Clearwater en travers le centre de l'Alberta durant l'etage du Albien inferieur eleva le niveau de sedimentation de base et declencha l'accumulation des strates de Mannville inferieur. Peu de sediments s'accumulerent dans l'est de la region sous etude, topographiquement plus elevee, a l'exception d'un complexe reseau de vallees. Du cote ouest de la vallee Cutbank, par contre, jusqu'a 60 metres de sediments du Mannville inferieur furent deposes. On les separe en trois membres: le gres Cutbank a la base, suivi du membre medial, et enfin le membre "calcaire". Ces strates demontrent une evolution progressive du milieu fluvial aux milieux lacustre et de la zone littorale.

Lorsque la mer se retira, l'erosion reprit dans une grande partie de la region etudiee; la sedimentation subsequent des couches du Mannville superieur est characterisee par la presence de grandes quantites de materiaux d'origine volcanique.
