Tidally Influenced, Transgressive Shelf Sediments in the Viking Formation, Previous HitCarolineNext Hit, Alberta

ABSTRACT

The Viking Formation in the Previous HitCarolineNext Hit area, Alberta comprises both transgressive and regressive depositional sequences. The lower portion of the Viking Formation is a progradational shoreface sequence in which non-marine sediments either were never deposited or were eroded by the subsequent transgression. Sediments in the regressive facies consist of interbedded sandstones, siltstones and shales. Sandstones are sharp-based with solemarks, shale rip-up clasts, hummocky cross-stratification and wave ripple lamination. These facies represent the progradation of a wave-dominated shoreline.

The upper portion of the Viking Formation represents a transgressive shelf complex formed during a worldwide sea level rise. Sediment in the transgressive facies is pebbly, medium- to coarse-grained sandstone and conglomerate up to 6 m thick, overlain and/or underlain by shales. The sandstones and conglomerates contain high-angle and compound crossbedding. These coarse sandstones and conglomerates were deposited as ridges on a tidally affected offshore shelf during the Viking transgression. The best reservoir is developed in these facies.

RESUME

Des sequences transgressive et regressive de deposition sont l'une et l'autre comprises dans la Formation Viking de la region de Previous HitCarolineTop, Alberta. La partie inferieure de la formation Viking est une sequence de rivage en progression vers la mer dans laquelle les sediments continentaux ne furent jamais deposes ou furent erodes par la periode transgressive subsequente. Les sediments du facies regressif sont composes de gres, de microgres et de schistes argileux interstratifies. Les gres ont une base saillante exhibant des empreintes de striation, des fragments d'arrachement de schistes-argileux, des stratifications entrecroisees avec creux et bosses et des laminations de rides symetriques. Ces facies representent dans leur ensemble la progression vers la mer d'une ligne de rivage dominee par les vagues.

La partie superieure de la Formation Viking represente un plateau transgressif de type complexe forme durant une hausse mondiale du niveau marin. Les sediments de ce facies transgressif sont representes par des gres (moyen-grossier) a galets et des conglomerats atteignant six metres d'epaisseur. Des schistes argileux les recouvrent et/ou forment des couches sous-jacentes. Les gres et les conglomerats contiennent des stratifications entrecroisees a angle eleve et composees. Ces gres de type grossier et ces conglomerats furent deposes sous-forme de cretes au large d'un rivage affecte par les marees durant la transgression Viking. Le meilleur reservoir est developpe dans ces facies.
