Abstract
Submarine Canyon Fills of the Hector Formation, Lake Louise, Alberta: Late Precambrian Syn-Rift Deposits of the Proto-Pacific Miogeocline
ABSTRACT
Late Proterozoic (Hadrynian) coarse clastics of the Hector Formation (Miette Group) are well exposed and relatively undisturbed in an area near Lake Louise, Alberta. Two large-scale channel-fill sequences were studied in detail: a minimum 135-m deep, cut-and-fill at Redoubt Mountain, near Lake Louise, and a >20-m thick sequence at Bath Creek Quarry.
Three facies associations occur: 1) a Fine-grained Association of thinly interbedded, grey-black slates and graded, sharp-based siltstones with Bouma sequences; 2) a Medium-grained Association of graded matrix- and clast-supported, structureless fine-pebble conglomerate and graded pebbly sandstones with Bouma sequences; and 3) a Coarse-grained Association of chaotic conglomerate/slate mixtures and structureless, coarse-pebble matrix-supported or clast-supported conglomerate. Less common facies are rare lensen- or flaser-bedded sandstones in the Fine- and Medium-grained associations; trough cross-bedded sandstones in the Medium-grained Association; and ungraded cobble/coarse conglomerates and slightly disrupted bedded pebbly sandstone and slate in the Coarse-grained Association. The Fine-grained associations are interpreted as continental slope deposits; the Medium- and Coarse-grained associations as submarine canyon fills.
Paleocurrents within the Coarse- and Medium-grained associations are toward the northeast at Redoubt Mountain and toward the southeast at Bath Creek Quarry. Paleocurrents in the overlying Fine-grained Association at both localities are mainly westerly. The over-all sedimentary sequences and paleocurrent patterns are interpreted as representing the cut-and-fill of Late Precambrian deep-water submarine canyons on an offshore tilted fault-block, perhaps the seaward margin of a half-graben. As such, this half-graben marginal basin may record deep-water syn-rift sedimentation, associated with a Late Precambrian rifting stage in the evolution of the proto-Pacific miogeocline.
