Laboratory Study of the Effects of Steam-Condensate Flooding in the Clearwater Formation: High Temperature Flow Experiments

ABSTRACT

A laboratory study was completed to determine the interaction between steam condensate and Cold Lake oil sand during steam stimulation. High and neutral pH fluids were passed through sand packs filled with Clearwater Formation sand. The temperature and pressures of the experiments were similar to those encountered in a reservoir during steam injection.

Results indicate that steam condensate flooding affects the sand by reducing permeability, increasing the amount of material in the <38 µm size fraction, decreasing dolomite content, decreasing kaolinite content in the finer fractions, producing CO2, precipitating smectite rims on framework grains, and precipitating calcite in pore spaces.

Smectite growth is the main cause of permeability reduction because it increases the amount of material in the pore spaces and it creates a microporosity network that restricts flow. An injection fluid of high pH causes more smectite growth, and subsequently more permeability loss, than an injection fluid of neutral pH.

RESUME

Une etude en laboratoire a ete completee afin de determiner l'action reciproque entre la combinaison vapeur-condensat et le sable petrolifere Cold Lake, durant la stimulation a la vapeur. Des fluides a pH eleve et a pH neutre furent passes a travers des paquets de sable remplis de sable de la formation Clearwater. Les temperatures et les pressions des essais etaient semblables a celles rencontrees dans un reservoir lors de l'injection de vapeur.

Les resultats demontrent que l'injection de vapeur-condensat affecte le sable en reduisant la permeabilite, en augmentant la quantite de materiel de la classe granulometrique <38 µm, en diminuant le volume de dolomie, en reduisant la teneur en kaolinite des fractions les plus fines, en produisant du CO2, en precipitant des franges de smectite sur les grains de structure, et en precipitant de la calcite dans la porosite.

La croissance de smectite est la principale cause de reduction de la permeabilite, due a l'apport de materiel dans la porosite et a la creation d'une reseau de microporosite reduisant l'ecoulement. L'injection d'un fluide a pH eleve provoque plus de croissance de smectite, et par consequent une perte additionelle de permeabilite, que l'injection d'un fluide a pH neutre.
