Computerized Database Applications to the Lower Cretaceous Mannville Group of the Lloydminster Area, Western Canada: Case Histories

ABSTRACT

The system of data collection, storage and retrieval for Lower Cretaceous heavy oil reservoirs of the Lloydminster area of Western Canada outlined by Putnam and Klovan (1987) was tested by its application to clastic sequences in two areas (Aberfeldy and Pikes Peak). In the test areas an attempt was made to determine the rock geometry and the dominant controls on hydrocarbon distribution.

At Aberfeldy, the General Petroleum interval consists of linear channel fill sandstones and mudstones juxtaposed against wave-formed sheet sandstones. The overlying Sparky interval consists of linear and sheet sandstones, which formed within prograded wave-formed environments. Some linear Sparky sandstones formed in response to synsedimentary compaction of General Petroleum mudstones.

At Pikes Peak the main reservoir zone, the Waseca, has a basal sheet sandstone overlain by ribbon-shaped deposits of sandstone and mudstone. The interval formed within channelled and related sedimentary environments.

At Aberfeldy and Pikes Peak, hydrocarbons are found in several zones, which represent different depositional environments. The hydrocarbon distribution is primarily controlled by structural features that are post-Mannville in age. The main structural influence is thought to be several small-scale faults. Within the structurally highest areas, sandstone thickness exerts a secondary influence on oil column thickness. Thus, defining the sites of future exploitation involves the selection of areas with thick reservoirs found overlying structural highs. Furthermore, in Aberfeldy, a subunit of the Sparky, the Sparky 'B', exhibits linear trends of relatively poor reservoir rocks contained within sheet-like deposits of very porous sandstone. These trends will probably influence the paths of any injected fluids used in secondary and tertiary recovery.

This study illustrates the usefulness of gathering subsurface data on a fine vertical scale but over large stratigraphic intervals. The advantages of examining subsurface deposits in terms of structure and fluid distributions, in addition to sedimentary facies and stratigraphic relationships, are displayed and discussed.

Le systeme de receuillement, de rangement et de recouvrement de donnees sur les reservoirs d'huile lourde du Cretace inferieur de la region de Lloydminster dans l'Ouest canadien, presente par Putnam et Klovan (1987), a ete mis a l'essai sur les series clastiques de deux regions (Aberfeldy et Pikes Peak). Dans ces deux regions, une tentative a ete faite afin de definir les geometries des roches et les elements exercant un controle dominant sur la distribution des hydrocarbures.

A Aberfeldy, l'intervalle General Petroleum est compose de chenaux lineaires remplis de gres et d'argiles juxtaposes a des couches de gres marin forme par les vagues. L'intervalle surjacent Sparky est forme de gres lineaires et en couches, qui furent deposes en milieux de progression vers la mer faconnes par la vague. Certains gres Sparky lineaires se formerent en reponse a la compaction syn-sedimentaire des argiles General Petroleum.

A Pikes Peak la zone reservoir principale, la Waseca, est composee d'une couche de gres de base sous-jacente a des depots de gres et d'argile en forme de ruban. Cet intervalle se forma dans un milieu chenalise et en milieux connexes a ce dernier.

A Aberfeldy et Pikes Peak, on retrouve des hydrocarbures dans plusieurs zones qui representent differents milieux sedimentaires. La distribution des hydrocarbures est controlee principalement par la structure qui est post-Mannville. On considere que cette structure est sous forme de nombreuses petites failles. A l'interieur des aires les plus elevees du point de vue structural, l'epaisseur du gres exerce une influence secondaire sur la hauteur impregnee par l'huile. Ainsi, la definition des sites pour l'exploration future implique la selection des aires comportant d'epais reservoirs situes sur des domes anticlinaux. En plus, a Aberfeldy, une sous-division de la Sparky, la Sparky "B", montre des tendances lineaires de reservoirs de qualite relativement pauvre renfermes dans des depots de gres tres poreux et ayant l'aspect de couches. Ces tendances influeront probablement sur les parcours que suivront n'importe lesquels fluides injectes lors du recouvrement secondaire et tertiaire.

Cette etude demontre l'utilite du receuillement de donnees de subsurface sur une echelle verticale detaillee mais aussi sur de grands intervalles stratigraphiques. Les avantages que comporte l'examen des depots de subsurface du point de vue de la structure et de la distribution des fluides, ainsi que des facies sedimentaires et des rapports stratigraphiques, sont presentes et discutes.
