Upper Cretaceous Warping and Fault Movement on the Southern Flank of the Peace River Arch, Alberta

Bruce S. Hart, A. Guy Plint

ABSTRACT

A regional isopach map of the Cardium Formation north of Township 65 indicates that this formation thins north-westward against the southern flank of the Peace River Arch. This may be evidence of syndepositional uplift of the Arch during Turonian time. Cardium isopachs also have a strong northwest-southeast trend that parallels the Fox Creek Escarpment and a series of basement structures. Detailed log correlation in northeast British Columbia shows that two phases of localized fault movement have occurred. The first phase (late Turonian) offsets the E3 and lower markers in the Cardium, but does not affect the top of the Cardium (E7 surface). The second phase (mid-late Coniacian) offsets the E7 surface and overlying markers in the Muskiki Formation, but does not affect the Marshybank Formation, of early Santonian age. These faults do not appear to reflect any of the regional structural trends associated with the Peace River Arch.
