Abstract
The Subsidence, Compaction, Thermal and Maturation History of the Egret Member Source Rock, Jeanne D'Arc Basin, Offshore Newfoundland
ABSTRACT
The Jeanne d'Arc Basin exhibits a classic half graben geometry preserving a thick sequence of Mesozoic synrift sediments capped with a thin sequence of Cenozoic post rift deposits. During the Upper Jurassic (Kimmeridgian), paleo-climatological, -oceanographic, -geographic and -tectonic conditions combined to allow the deposition and preservation of a major oil-prone source rock. The subsidence, compaction and thermal conductivity histories of this interval have been merged with a steady state thermal model and subsequently converted into an understanding of its maturity evolution. The subsidence, compaction, thermal and maturity model has been developed for 33 exploration wells and 5 dummy well sections throughout the Jeanne d'Arc Basin allowing the development of a temporal and spatial maturity framework for the Egret Member source rock. Maps of the maturity evolution of the Egret Member show that the present day, observed Egret maturity pattern throughout the Basin was well established as early as 100 Ma due to early, very rapid subsidence and high sedimentation rates. A non-mature to mature boundary to the south of the Basin was established by 100 Ma and remained static until 40 Ma when it moved to encompass the Terra Nova area. To the east, this boundary, although remaining static from 100-60 Ma, eventually moved eastward to encompass the Outer Ridge area. The regional development of Egret maturity through time can be linked to the underlying basin geodynamics. The sensitivity of modelled maturity timing to the choice of thermal conductivity/heat flow assumptions used is of the order of 20 Ma.
The framework of maturity evolution for the Egret source rock within the Jeanne d'Arc Basin provides a platform for further basin hydrocarbon charge studies to investigate the ultimate genetic potential, yields/volumes of the Egret Member, secondary migration dynamics and final entrapment mechanics.
