Petroleum Geology of the Continental Margin South of the Islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon, Offshore Eastern Canada

ABSTRACT

The portion of St. Pierre Moratorium Block south of 46°N contains Laurentian Subbasin, a deep Mesozoic depocentre which forms part of the larger Scotian Basin. The subsurface geology of the area may be considered an eastward extension of the Scotian Shelf which has a similar sedimentary, structural and thermal history. The rift-phase Orpheus Graben of northeastern Scotian Shelf widens eastward into the St. Pierre Block and deepens into Laurentian Subbasin. Thick Jurassic, Cretaceous and Tertiary sequences have filled the depocentre and have been structured by typical Atlantic-type margin extensional tectonics. Some salt tectonism is present but shallow piercements are rare. Approximately 300 structural leads have been identified and a preliminary assessment of recoverable hydrocarbon reserves, based on a revised Sable Island model, gives an average expectation of about 250 billion cubic metres (8 to 9 TCF) of gas and 100 million cubic metres (600 to 700 million barrels) of oil. Low probability (speculative) estimates are several times those levels.

La portion du bloc du moratoire de Saint Pierre au sud de 46°N contient le sub-bassin Laurentian, une zone de sedimentation maximale mesozoique profonde faisant partie du bassin Scotian plus etendu. La geologie de profondeur de cette region peut etre consideree comme une extension orientale de la plate-forme neo-ecossaise qui a une histoire sedimentaire, structurale et thermale similaire. Le graben Orpheus de la phase de rift dans le nord-est de la plate-forme neo-ecossaise s'elargit vers l'est dans le bloc de Saint Pierre et s'approfondit dans le sub-bassin Laurentian. D'epaisses sequences jurassiques, cretacees et tertiaires ont comble la zone de sedimentation maximale et ont ete affectees structuralement par du tectonisme en extension typique des marges atlantiques. Du tectonisme de sel est present mais les percements peu profonds sont rares. A-peu-pres 300 indices structuraux ont ete identifies et une estimation preliminaire des reserves d'hydrocarbures recuperables, basee sur un modele de Sable Island revise, donne une prevision moyenne d'a-peu-pres 250 milliards de metres cubes (8 a 9 TCF) de gaz et 100 millions de metres cubes (600 a 700 barils) d'huile. Les estimations de faible probabilite (speculatives) sont plusieurs fois superieures a ces valeurs.
