Sampling and Analytical Strategies for Delineating Petroleum Contaminated Soils and Ground Water

J.V. Headley, W.E. Rae

ABSTRACT

A critical evaluation of sampling and analytical strategies is demonstrated to be an integral part of a multidisciplinary approach to delineating petroleum contaminated soil and ground water. To ensure that appropriate data quality objectives are established, this evaluation is best initiated at the project design stage.

Described are studies of characterization of petroleum contaminated sites, from the perspective of environmental analytical chemists. The examples selected illustrate some commonly occurring problems and practical solutions pertaining to: (a) contamination of ground water and soils by leaking underground storage tanks; (b) discrepancies between analytical results for total petroleum hydrocarbons, volatile aromatic hydrocarbons (BTEX) and C5-30 hydrocarbon scans; and (c) chemical characterization of petroleum waste containing industrial solvents.
