The Role of Fluvial Processes During Deposition of the (Cardium) Carrot Creek/Cyn-Pem Conglomerates

ABSTRACT

In the Carrot Creek and adjacent Cyn-Pem areas of west-central Alberta, the conglomeratic strata of the Late Cretaceous Cardium Formation have been the subject of extensive research. At present, however, a number of important issues remain unresolved. These are the apparent paucity of lithological evidence for the Cardium fluvial "feeder" channels and the characteristic irregular basal surface and western margin of many Carrot Creek/Cyn-Pem pools. In agreement with earlier authors, the paucity of the Cardium channels is most likely related to transgressive erosion. The irregularities along the basal surface and western margin, on the other hand, are interpreted to be related primarily to fluvial erosion. During periods of decreasing relative sea-level rise major fluvial channels in the Carrot Creek/Cyn-Pem area adjusted to changing base-level conditions and increases in sediment supply and calibre by eroding their beds. The irregular surfaces presently observed relate directly to this erosion. Paleoseaward, contemporaneous shoreface incision created the steep eastward-dipping erosion surfaces so common in the Carrot Creek/Cyn-Pem area. Erosion was succeeded by conglomerate deposition that coincided with relative sea-level stillstand and progradation of the local Cardium shoreline.

RESUME

Dans les regions adjacentes de Carrot Creek et de Cyn-Pem de l'ouest de l'Alberta central, les strates conglomeratiques de la formation Cardium cretacee superieure ont ete le sujet d'etudes approfondies. A l'heure actuelle, un nombre de questions importantes restent cependant sans reponse. Celles-ci sont le manque apparent d'evidence lithologique de chenaux fluviatiles "d'alimentation" du Cardium et la surface de base et la marge occidentale irregulieres caracteristiques de plusieures zones a hydrocarbures de Carrot Creek/Cyn-Pem. En accord avec d'autres auteurs, le manque de chenaux du Cardium est le plus vraisemblablement attribue a l'erosion transgressive. Par contre, les irregularites de la surface des base et de la marge occidentale sont interpretees comme etant principalement reliees a l'erosion fluviale. Durant des periodes de diminution de l'elevation du niveau relatif de la mer, des chenaux fluviatiles majeurs dans la region de Carrot Creek/Cyn-Pem s'ajusterent aux conditions changeantes du niveau de base et aux augmentations de volume et de calibre des sediments en erodant leurs lits. Les surfaces irregulieres observees sont directement reliees a cette erosion. L'incision cotiere contemporaine vers la mer ancestrale crea les surfaces d'erosion abruptes inclinees vers l'est si communes dans la region de Carrot Creek/Cyn-Pem. L'erosion fut suivie du depot de conglomerat qui coincida a un status quo du niveau relatif de la mer et a la progradation du bord de mer local de l'epoque Cardium.
