A Maturation Framework for Jurassic Sediments in the Sable Subbasin, Offshore Nova Scotia

ABSTRACT

The Sable Subbasin, offshore Nova Scotia, contains significant accumulations of hydrocarbons, chiefly natural gas, that have been sourced and reservoired in a thick sequence of postrift Mesozoic sediments. A sequence of deltaic clastics (Jurassic-Cretaceous Mic Mac, Missisauga and Verrill Canyon formations) with lipid poor, terrestrial Type III organic matter, low in TOC, represents one of several source rock concepts that have been invoked to explain these hydrocarbon occurrences. We present an organic maturity framework for such a source concept with organic matter distributed in the upper Jurassic (152 Ma datum) Mic Mac and Verrill Canyon formations (lateral equivalents). Our maturity framework models result from an examination of the interplay between the subsidence, compaction and thermal histories of 24 wells. Illustrated with reference to the Eagle C-21 well location, the assumed source interval entered into the gas generative zone at around 110 Ma. The full sensitivity of this timing to time variant thermal (heat flow) assumption is examined. The maturation timing sensitivity due to heat flow assumptions is of the order of 25 Ma. The progressive maturity of the presumed source datum throughout the basin is imaged and provides a preliminary framework for hydrocarbon charge modelling studies within the basin.

RESUME

Le sous-bassin Sable, au large de la Nouvelle Ecosse, contient des accumulations d'hydrocarbures significatives, surtout sous forme de gaz naturel, qui furent generees et emmagasinees dans une sequence epaisse des sediments mesozoiques de post-rift. Une sequence de sediments deltaiques (formations Mic Mac, Missisauga et Verrill Canyon jurassiques-cretacees) contenant de la matiere organique terrestre de type III pauvre en lipides, a faible teneur en carbone organique total, represente l'un des concepts de roches meres qui ont ete invoques pour expliquer ces accumulations d'hydrocarbures. Nous presentons un contexte de maturite organique pour un tel concept de roche mere dans lequel la matiere organique est distribuee dans les formations Mic Mac et Verrill Canyon (et equivalents lateraux) jurassiques superieures (152 Ma). Nos modeles de maturite resultent de l'examen des relations entre subsidence, compaction et histoires thermiques de 24 puits. Illustre sur base du puits Eagle C-21, l'intervalle de roche mere presume entra dans la fenetre a gaz aux environs de 110 Ma. La sensibilite de cet age par rapport a diverses hypotheses thermiques en fonction du temps (flux de chaleur) est examinee. La sensibilite de l'age de maturite a divers scenarios de flux de chaleur est de l'ordre de 25 Ma. La maturation progressive de l'intervalle de roche mere presume est imagee pour tout le bassin, et offre un contexte preliminaire pour des etudes de modelisation du remplissage en hydrocarbures des reservoirs dans le bassin.
