Relation Between Basement Heat Flow and Thermal State of the Sedimentary Succession of the Alberta Plains

Jacek A. Majorowicz, Alan M. Jessop,

ABSTRACT

Average heat flow for provinces of the Precambrian basement of the Alberta Sedimentary Basin, derived from radiogenic heat production and uranium-lead dates of basement rocks together with thermal conductivity profiles, were used to predict temperature-depth profiles and thermal gradients in the sedimentary succession. Conductive steady state of the thermal field within the sedimentary rocks was assumed as was the influence of compaction and temperature upon thermal conductivity in one of the models. Comparison of predicted and observed thermal gradients showed large discrepancies in magnitude and regional trends for all conductivity models used. Eastward and northeastward increase of the observed thermal gradients for the mostly-clastic Mesozoic section can be partly explained by the effect of compaction on thermal conductivity. An eastward decrease of the maximum burial depth of the clastic rocks in the basin before erosion is an important factor in the thermal conductivity trends throughout the basin. Thermal input from the basement and assumed conductive steady state do not explain the observed variations of thermal field in the overburden. The largest differences between observed and predicted temperature gradient were observed in the north and northeastern part of the basin. This analysis adds support to the hypothesis of hydrogeological distortion of heat flow in the basin superimposed on the control of the thermal field of the sedimentary section by distribution of basement heat flow.
