The Thermal Evolution and Timing of Hydrocarbon Generation in the Maritimes Basin of Eastern Canada: Evidence from Previous HitApatiteNext Hit Previous HitfissionNext Hit Previous HitTrackNext Hit Data

ABSTRACT

Sandstone drill core and/or cuttings from six wells in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Cabot Strait have been analyzed using the Previous HitapatiteNext Hit Previous HitfissionNext Hit Previous HittrackNext Hit (AFT) method. Measured AFT ages for the late Paleozoic sandstones range from 26 ±7 to 184 ±28 Ma (2-sigma.gif (835 bytes) errors). The AFT data indicate that most Maritimes Basin strata were heated to temperatures in excess of 100-150°C very soon after their deposition. The strata also attained significant vitrinite reflectance (Ro) levels (i.e., reaching the oil window) early in the burial history. These findings imply the generation of hydrocarbons and coalbed methane in the early basin history (pre-250 Ma).

In the Maritimes Basin AFT and Ro data provide complementary information about the integrated thermal history, including maximum burial temperatures (from Ro data), and information on the subsequent cooling history from AFT Previous HitanalysisNext Hit. The present study also supports the proposal made previously by others that substantial erosion of the Eastern Canadian margin (up to 4 km) has occurred since the Permian and extends the AFT evidence for this erosional event to include the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence area.

Thermal models of the AFT data demonstrate that they are consistent with a history of exhumation of basin strata since late Permian time. The model-predicted AFT age and Previous HittrackNext Hit length histograms closely correspond to the measured AFT parameters. AFT Previous HitanalysisNext Hit also indicates present-day geothermal gradients of less than 40°C/km.

Des carottes de sondage et/ou des debris de forage de six puits du golfe du St-Laurent et du detroit de Cabot ont ete analysees a l'aide de la methode de traces de Previous HitfissionTop d'apatites (AFT). Les ages determines par AFT pour les gres du Paleozoique tardif se situent entre 26 ±7 a 184 ±28 Ma (2-sigma.gif (835 bytes) d'erreurs). Les donnees AFT indiquent que la plupart des couches du bassin des maritimes ont ete rechauffees a des temperatures superieures a 100-150°C tres peu de temps apres leurs depots. Les couches ont egalement atteint des taux de reflectance vitrinite Ro significatives (c.-a-d. atteignant la fenetre petrole) tot dans l'evolution de l'enfouissement (pre 250 Ma). Ces trouvailles laissent egalement entendre la generation de methane d'hydrocarbure et de methane de couche de houille tot dans l'evolution du bassin (avant 250 Ma).

Les donnees AFT et Ro du bassin des maritimes donnent des renseignements complementaires sur l'evolution thermique integree, y compris des temperatures maximum d'enfouissement (de donnees Ro), et de l'information sur l'evolution subsequente du refroidissement a partir de l'analyse AFT. Cette etude appuie egalement la suggestion faite auparavant par d'autres que l'erosion importante de la marge de l'Est du Canada, (jusqu'a 4 km) s'est produite depuis le Permien et inclut dans la preuve AFT de ce phenomene d'erosion la region sud du golfe du St-Laurent.

Les modeles thermiques des donnees AFT indiquent que ces memes donnees se conforment a l'hypothese de l'exhumation des strates du bassin depuis le Permien tardif. L'age theorique prevu par le modele et des histogrammes des traces correspondent de pres aux parametres AFT mesures. L'analyse AFT indique egalement des gradients geothermiques actuels de moins de 40°C/km.
