Thermal Maturation and Source Rock Potential of Cretaceous Strata in the Chilcotin-Nechako Region, South-Central British Columbia: GEOLOGICAL NOTE

ABSTRACT

The Chilcotin-Nechako region of south-central British Columbia includes a diverse succession of unexplored and poorly exposed clastic strata in excess of 4000 m thick. Rock-Eval pyrolysis and total organic carbon analyses of outcrop and well samples suggest the strata have low liquid hydrocarbon potential although better source rocks locally occur. Much of the Cretaceous and part of the Tertiary succession are within the oil window whereas pre-Cretaceous strata are mainly overmature. Strata in the Chilcotin-Nechako region are less mature than equivalent strata in basins to the north which is attributed to lower paleoheat flow.

La region de Chilcotin-Nechako du centre-ouest de Colombie-Britannique inclut une succession de diverse couches clastiques pauvrement exposees d'une epaisseur qui depasse 4 000 m. La pyrolyse de Rock-Eval et les analyses du total de carbone d'origine organique de l'affleurement suggerent que les couches ont un faible potentiel d'hydrocarbure liquide meme si de meilleures roches mere existent dans la region. Une partie importante de la succession du Cretace et une partie du Tertiaire se trouvent dans la fenetre de petrole alors que les couches du pre-Cretace sont principalement surevoluees. Les couches dans la region de Chilcotin-Nechako sont moins evoluees que les couches equivalentes dans les bassins au nord a cause du debit de la paleochaleur.
