Abstract
Upper Cretaceous Medicine Hat Formation and First White Speckled Shale in Southeastern Alberta: Evidence for Localized Shallow Water Deposition
ABSTRACT
Marine sediments of the Medicine Hat Formation and First White Speckled Shale in the subsurface of southeastern Alberta reflect the influence of relative sea-level fluctuations during the Santonian Stage of the Upper Cretaceous in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. A pause, or minor regression, within the overall transgression associated with the Upper Colorado Group resulted in deposition of coarsening-upward Medicine Hat Formation sandstone units as shallow shelf, sand bodies. As the transgression resumed, finer grained marine siltstone and mudstone of the First White Speckled Shale was deposited. Within this unit a previously unnamed sandstone interval (Sweetgrass Member) was identified in part of the study area. Paleontological data show that this sandstone is younger than the Medicine Hat sandstone with which it has been previously correlated. The Sweetgrass Member is a result of a minor shallowing episode during the overall sea-level rise and deep-water conditions associated with the First White Speckled Shale. During deposition of the First White Speckled Shale, localized shallowing increased input of detrital material in the water column, which prevented planktic foraminifera from thriving and caused a reduced nannofossil diversity. Within the Sweetgrass Member this is reflected in a decrease of total organic matter and a shift from Type II to Type III organic matter. Combined evidence suggests the presence of a bathymetric feature, probably related to the Sweetgrass Arch, which caused localized shallow water sedimentation within a relatively deep Santonian basin.
Porosity in both the Medicine Hat Formation and Sweetgrass Member ranges from 10 to 14 per cent and permeability is generally less than 1.0 md. The Medicine Hat sandstone is an active exploration and production target, particularly in the Medicine Hat Gas Field. The Sweetgrass Member has hydrocarbon entrapment potential and may represent an opportunity of bypassed pay.

Les sediments marins de la Formation Medicine Hat et de First White Speckled Shale dans la subsurface du sud-est de l'Alberta indiquent l'influence des fluctuations des niveaux marins relatifs pendant le stade Santonien du Cretace superieur du bassin sedimentaire de l'Ouest canadien. Une pause ou une faible regression pour l'ensemble de la transgression connexe au Groupe du Colorado Superieur donna en resultat des unites de sediments de gres grossissants vers la partie superieure de la Formation Medicine Hat en plate-forme peu profonde ou dune sous-marine. trangression resuma, de l'aleuronite a grains plus fins et de l'argile du First White Speckled Shale se deposerent. Dans cette unite un intervalle qui n'avait pas ete nomme auparavant (Membre Sweetgrass) a ete identifie comme partie de la region etudiee. Les donnees paleontologiques indiquent que ce gres est plus jeune que le gres de Medicine Hat avec lequel il avait deja ete associe. Le Membre Sweetgrass est le resultat d'un episode de faible croissance de la profondeur pendant l'ensemble de l'augmentation du niveau marin et des conditions des eaux profondes associees avec le First White Speckled Shale. Pendant la sedimentation du First White Speckled Shale, l'approfondissement localise augmenta la puissance de matiares detritiques dans la colonne d'eau qui empecha les Foramiferes de planctons de prosperer et causa une reduction de la diversite de nannofossiles. Ceci est reflete par une baisse de matiere total organique dans le Membre Sweetgrass et le passage de matiere organique de Type II au Type III. L'ensemble des signes suggerent la presence d'une caracteristique bathymetrique, probablement connexe a l'Arche Sweetgrass, qui causa une sedimentation localisee en eau peu profonde dans un bassin Santonien relativement profond.
La porosite de la Formation Medicine Hat et du Membre Sweetgrass s'etend de 10 a 14 pour cent et une permeabilite generalement de moins de 1,0 md. Le gres de Medicine Hat est une cible d'exploration de production active, surtout le champ petrolifere de Medicine Hat. Le Membre Sweetgrass possede un potentiel de piegage d'hydrocarbure et peut representer une possibilite de gisement devie.
