A New Estimate of the Amount of Displacement on the Denali Fault System Based on the Occurrence of Carbonate Megaboulders in the Dezadeash Formation (Jura-Cretaceous), Yukon, and the Nutzotin Mountains Sequence (Jura-Cretaceous), Alaska

ABSTRACT

The Dezadeash Formation and Nutzotin Mountains sequence are Jura-Cretaceous flysch units thought to have been offset by 300 to 400 km of dextral slip on the Denai fault system (DFS). Megaboulders occur in the Dezadeash Formation near Quill Creek, Yukon, northeast of the DFS, and in the Nutzotin Mountains sequence at Noyes Mountain, Alaska, southwest of the DFS. The megaboulders are lithologically alike [i.e., Triasic(?) carbonate] and they occur in similar deep marine mudstone sequences. They are interpreted as part of the same debris flowbed that was offset in post-Early Cretaceous time by movement on the DFS. The megaboulder localities are separated by about 370 km (measured parallel to the strike of the DFS), which is a more precise determination of the amount of displacement on the DFS than previous estimates.

La Formation de Dezadeash et la sequence des monts Nutzotin sont des unites de flysch du Jura-Cretace, don't on pense qu'elles ont ete deplacees par un rejet dextre de 300-400 km le long du systeme de faille Denali (SFD). Des megablocs se presentent dans la Formation de Dezadeash pres du ruisseau Quill au Yukon, au nord-est du SFD, et dans la sequence des monts Nutzotin, au mont Noyes en Alaska, au sud-ouest du SFD. Les megablocs sont lithologiquement similaires [i.e., carbonate du Trias (?)] et ils se presentent dans des sequences similaires de mudstones pelagiques. Ils sont interpretes comme faisant partie des memes lits de coulees de debris qui ont ete deplaces apres le Cretace precode par un mouvement le long du SFD. Les localites a megablocs sont separes par pres de 370 km (mesures parallelement a la direction du SFD), ce qui est une mesure plus precise de la quantite de deplacement le long du SFD que les estimations precedentes.
